Overworked and Constantly Shouted At – My J1 Working Experience

In Ireland it is common for people to go abroad towards the end of college to somewhere warm and work for the summer. J1 visas are easy to get and it’s a great experience. You get a job for the summer, go drinking and do a bit of travelling. I was no different and this summer I sent 3 months in America with a group of my Irish friends. There were seven of us in a 2 bed apartment house, which was a smaller group than most Irish; it was more common to have 10-15 people in a house. It was a fantastic experience and I don’t regret it a bit, but this post is not about my J1, but rather one part of it, my job. Scandals That Never Were

The opposition to Barack Obama has been extraordinarily vicious and vindictive throughout his Presidency. He has been accused of the wildest allegations from being a Muslim to a Socialist to planning to destroy America. Yet the common thread linking these scandals is not any actual wrong doing, but rather blind hatred by people who so desperately wish to see a scandal that they twist any minor issue. This is the case in the attempts to create a corruption scandal with Solyndra, link Obama to gun running gone wrong in Fast and Furious, accusations of a cover in the unending Benghazi saga. These phony scandals have so little behind them that I had chosen not to give them any credence by addressing them; however, they refuse to go away so I will point out how false they are. Time To Fix Americas’ Gun Problem

The world has been shocked by the news of the shooting in Newton, Connecticut. Although we don’t have all the details, it 28 people (20 of whom were children) were shot. What makes this massacre particularly tragic is that it occurred in an elementary school for children aged between 5 and 11. I was horrified and like most Europeans I wondered if America would now do something about its serious gun problem. It seems that every couple of weeks there is a new gun rampage and massacre. To those who say we should not politicise this event, let me say that we must learn from this incident so that it never occurs again. If this isn’t an event to make America re-examine its laws, then what is? Continue reading “Time To Fix Americas’ Gun Problem”

War Is A Racket

It is a bold and engaging idea that we are manipulated into war by big business. It follows the view that the government is controlled by big business and made to serve their interests. It sees foreign policy as enforcing American economic dominance upon the world. The idea is that weapons manufacturers encourage war solely to make bigger profits. It is known as ‘The Devil Theory Of Imperialism’ or more simply in the statement that ‘War Is A Racket’. Continue reading “War Is A Racket”

Ron Paul – Radical Or Ridiculous?

Ron Paul is either a respectable, insightful voice of liberty or an eccentric old fool clinging to long out dated and daft ideas. A man who will save us from the clutches big government or someone who will deliver us into the claws of big business. Someone willing to challenge the PC brigade and speak the truth or a bigoted racist. A voice of common sense or a man ignorant of facts of life. A brave advocate of a new vision for American foreign policy or an isolationalist crank who wishes to cut America off from the rest of the world. A man who can bring great prosperity to the nation or economic Armageddon. Someone who belongs in the White House as leader of the free world or someone who belongs in a cave wearing a tinfoil hat, muttering conspiracy theories.
